How does one become eligible for a plot in George and what is the criteria?

In terms of the new Municipal Finance Management Act, Council has to, as from 1 July 2004, sell all unmovable Council property by means of the open public tender process.  All properties for sale are advertised in the local newspaper.  Anybody can submit a tender for the purchase of property that is on sale.

In terms of the mentioned Act, Council is, unfortunately, also not allowed to enter into an agreement with purchasers of properties to pay a deposit and the balance of the purchase price in monthly instalments as the Municipality is not considered to be a financial institution.

The purchase price must be paid in cash against registration of transfer of the property in the name of the successful tenderer and be secured by one or more bank or similar guarantee(s) issued at the expense of the successful tenderer, which guarantee(s) must be acceptable to Council and be submitted within 30 days upon request by Council’s attorneys.

You are welcome to submit a tender on any properties for sale that are advertised in the local newspaper.  These properties are placed on the market as and when available.
