"Water is a scarce resource which must be conserved and used responsibly." - Rashid Kahn:  Director of Water Affairs, Western Cape.

RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF BOREHOLE WATER FOR DOMESTIC USE In terms of Section 6(1)(i) of Schedule 3 of the National Water Act (Act No 36 of 1998), the National Department of Water Affairs has restricted the TAKING OF GROUND WATER from PRIVATE BOREHOLES for the IRRIGATION OF GARDENS to between 19:00 and 07:00.

ie. NO BOREHOLE WATER MAY BE EXTRACTED between 07:00-19:00 for the irrigation of domestic gardens.

Rainfall figures for Sunday, 21 February as per Eden DM Disaster Management:
Avontuur Bellevue - 4.6
George Weather Office - 8.7
George Witfontein - 25.8
George Peak - 27.0
Wilderness Heights - 15.6
Heidelberg - 2.2
Joubertina - 1.6
Mosselbaai- 0.2
Mosselbaai Rooiblom - 6.2
Plettenbergbaai Newlands - 16.8
Tsitsikamma - 18.4

Pumping of water from the Kaaimans will continue, this does not necessarily increase the dam's volume but stabilises the level, countering the volume of water drawn for consumption.
More good rain is expected Thursday 25 Feb 2010, and it is hoped that there will also be additional run-off by Friday 26 Feb 2010.

All-in-all fantastic news and really helps the situation!

Information from the desk of Mr Harold Basson, Senior Manager: Civil & Technical Services:
"The dam level has risen from 16,9% yesterday to 17,6% this morning. It will rise more during the week. Further rain is expected with a 60% chance of  20mm on Thursday. It will rain until Friday, so we expect a valuable improvement in the dam level by the end of the week. The drought is however far from broken and consumers are still requested to use water sparingly.

We will have water in the dam by the time the re-use plant is in commission. The completion  date is end of May."

The towns of George, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay have been declared Disaster Areas due to the current drought. The Southern Cape has experienced the lowest recorded rainfall in history. (Records date back 132 years.) Rainfall to date for 2009 is +- 40% of the annual average.

The water situation remains extremely serious.

Hot temperatures and below normal rainfall is forecast for January, February and March 2010. The re-use of waste water is going ahead. It is scheduled for completion in March 2010. This project will supply 30% of current demand.

Rain is desperately needed to supplement the level of the Garden Route dam.

Short and long term plans to increase water supply have commenced. Boreholes will be drilled. The Malgas Pumping scheme and the raising of the Garden Route dam spillway (to provide more storage capacity) are going ahead as per the original planning (in place since 2004).

The plea is not just to save water.
We must change habits inside the house!
It will be inconvenient. Careful consideration
must be given before using each drop of water.

(Rekords dateer sover as 132 jaar terug).
