What is Local Economic Development?
“The process by which public, business and non-governmental sector partners work collectively to create better conditions for economic growth and employment generation. The aim is to improve the quality of life for all” (World Bank 2003)
Current focus areas
The main project currently taking place within the Economic Development Unit is the PACA 2012. This process will result in the development of an Economic Development Strategy - more information is available
here.
Some other projects currently receiving attention, either in planning or execution phases include:
- Implementation of Council's Economic Revitalisation Policy (Investment Incentives)
- Marketing of George as investment destination through various channels
- Furniture Manufacturing sector audit
- Establishment of an ICT Incubator
- Ongoing work in the Art & Crafts sector
- Identification of sustainable business projects in rural areas of Uniondale and Haarlem
