Thusong Centres

Overview

Thusong Centres and Thusong Mobiles are hubs where a basket of government services are available. Thusong Centres and Mobiles essentially bring government services to communities often located in remote areas.

Thusong Fact Sheet.pdf

Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre:

The Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre was built in 2002 by the Department of Social Development (DSD). At that time, the Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre was operationally managed by an NGO (Non – Governmental Organisation). As from 1 October 2012, George Municipality took over the administrative and operational management of the Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre.

Vision: To serve the public with respect, courtesy, dignity, pride and to manage the Thusong Centre as a self-sustainable community centre.

Mission: The Thembalethu Service Centre will strive to deliver accessible and “customer orientated” service approach.

Core and Basket Services:

To provide Government services and information to the public
To provide rental office spaces to Government Departments, Educational Institutions, NGO’s

THUSONG PROGRAMME: community based programmes

The Thusong Programme is the scheduling and rolling out of the community based programmes and projects to the various communities around George Municipality  in partnership and with full participation of Municipal Officials, Government Departments, NGO’s and Private Sector, to serve the communities.

This programme started in 1999 around the country as one of the primary vehicles for the implementation of government service delivery programmes, rendering information services to local communities especially to the rural communities.

THUSONG OUTREACH MOBILES:

This is a 12 month Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre service delivery programme that is aimed at bringing Government services and information closer to the people, especially in the outlaying areas. The Jamborees (Thusong Outreach Mobiles) are also aimed at increasing Government services and visibility in rural areas.

DISABILITY SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Through this programme, the Thembalethu Thusong Service Centre will try to create a platform to assist the disabled people, the elderly people and orphaned children to fully access government services, information and job opportunities through the interaction with various government departments. The Centre will try to identify and prioritize needs and wants, especially of those people living with disabilities (disabled people) and the elderly. The Thusong Centre will try to come up with practical, constructive and empowering solutions in addressing the challenges faced by people living with disabilities.

THUSONG ARTS AND CULTURE PROGRAMMES

The purpose is to identify, recognize, encouraging, promote and preserve the continuation of the living heritage and practices of the African Traditional Indigenous heritage among our diverse communities.

THUSONG CENTRE STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENTS
Thusong Centre Stakeholder engagement is the co-operation between government and Parastatals and agencies and communities; cooperation between organized formations of civil society, small, medium and larger businesses and government, to mention but a few, they epitomize the spirit and example that by working together we are able to take South Africa forward.
